"Stepping Up: A Training Video for Substance Abuse counselors working with clients who are Deaf"
Written by Debra Guthmann, Ed.D and Cynthia B. Sternfeld, Ed. S. Produced by Dan Veltri, Treehouse Video LLC
Stepping Up is a program to enhance your ability to work with clients who are Deaf and may have a substance use disorders. This program is designed to address a variety of issues when working with clients at different stages of treatment, and can be used in conjunction with a variety of strategies and tools.
The introduction features a narrator who briefly describes some important information about language and culture to consider and three treatment approaches that may be useful when working with Deaf people who have substance use disorders. The three approaches include the Minnesota Model, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
The introduction is followed by three scenarios with different clients that a counselor may encounter during counseling sessions. In one scenario, a hearing counselor uses an interpreter while the other two counselors (one of whom is Deaf, the other hearing) are able to communicate directly using American Sign Language (ASL).
We suggest you view each part separately. The introduction is ten minutes long, and each of the three scenes is approximately 20 minutes long. The program is presented in ASL with voiceover in spoken English. Captioning for the entire program is available on the DVD subtitle track.
The DVD comes with a set of pdf files including a Program Guide, a Rubric for Discussion Questions, and other supplemental material.
Price: $10.00 (shipping included)
