Professionals Available to Provide Trainings

Program History

Since 1989, the Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals has been providing a full range of assessment and treatment services for deaf and hard of hearing persons. More than 900 deaf and hard of hearing persons from throughout the United States and Canada have received help from the Program in their efforts toward recovery from alcohol and other drug problems.

Training Expertise

In 1990, the Program also began to offer training sessions about substance abuse and deafness to community members and professionals. Materials focused on prevention, treatment and recovery were developed by the Program to address the need for materials especially designed for deaf and hard of hearing persons. The Program co-sponsored two national conferences which brought together professionals and community members to share information and network about important topics related to alcohol and other drugs. The Program has been the recipient of several Federal grants including three specifically geared to training. More than 600 people have been trained by Program staff through these sessions. Program staff have trained professionals from a variety of disciplines including vocational rehabilitation, education, counseling, mental health and social work.

Workshop Topics

The Program continues to offer training opportunities on a variety of topics related to substance abuse. Staff members who are trained and experienced in deafness and substance abuse can provide sessions for small or large groups of individuals. Training formats can be designed to accommodate the needs of participants using lecture, discussion, panel presentations, and hands-on activities. Training topics include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assessment of Alcohol/Other Drug use with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons
  • Barriers to Treatment and Recovery
  • Culturally Appropriate Tools and Approaches in Assessment and Treatment
  • Clinical Approaches in Substance Abuse Treatment with Deaf & Hard of Hearing Persons
  • Prevention / Education Topics and Techniques
  • Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS
  • Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence
  • Special Issues in Chemical Dependency Treatment (Abuse, Grief, Family Issues)
  • Variables that Impact Treatment and Recovery
  • Relapse Prevention and Aftercare
  • Communication Issues in Assessment, Treatment & Recovery
  • Dual Diagnosis Issues (Mental Health/Chemical Dependency)

Financial Arrangements

Financial arrangements for training sessions are developed on a case by case basis. Some factors to be considered in determining the costs for a training include the number of participants, the length of the training, the number of trainers required and the topics to be covered in the sessions. Generally, training costs include travel, food and lodging expenses for the trainer(s) and a per diem fee. Program staff are willing to negotiate the specific training costs with the sponsoring individual or agency.
